Owning your site

Do you actually own your website?

The questions to ask before you sign — about your code, your domain and your content — so no one can hold your site hostage.

Placeholder article for launch — replace with a real post. The Dutch version is a separate Flemish pass and is not machine-translated.

Plenty of local owners find out the hard way that the "web guy" kept the keys. Before you sign with anyone, three things should be yours and in your name:

Your code

The site itself — so you're never stuck if you part ways with whoever built it.

Your domain

Registered to you, not to your agency. This is the one that traps people most often.

Your content

The words and photos you paid for. They go with you.

Hosting and security are services we run for you — but if we ever part ways, the code, domain and content come with you. That's the difference between renting and owning.
